400,067. Making steam-boiler drums &c. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., Babcock House, Farringdon Street, London.-(Assignees of Harter, I.; 45, East 82nd Street, Manhattan, New York, U.S.A.) March 1, 1933, No. 6197. Convention date, March 7, 1932. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] A ngular bending; pipe-end closing ; forging- dies.-In forming a steam drum &c. with integral head, a shell 10 is clamped by jaws 12, 13 and positioned by an abutment 14. The end of the shell is heated to forging heat and a tool 19 on a slide 16 carried on a rotating face-plate 15 is moved, preferably axially of the shell, in zones to cause the metal to flow towards the axis of the shell. The operation is repeated until the opening is nearly closed. The manhole end is formed in a similar manner. If the shell has a welded longitudinal joint the bending of the end furnishes a means of testing the quality of the weld. The end of the drum may be thickened prior to forging by blows from a rotary hammer.
