Abstract

398,582. Controlling variable-speed gearing. CLOUDSLEY, J. L., 5, Chancery Lane, London. April 28, 1932, Nos. 12242 and 14501. [Class 80 (ii).] Hydraulic control mechanism for infinitely variable power transmission mechanism, comprises a piston movable in a cylinder constantly supplied with pressure liquid, and provided with a fixed exhaust port of variable capacity and with a movable sleeve adapted to vary the effective position of a second exhaust port. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the piston is pressed towards its upper low-gear position by a spring 9 and the torque reaction of the gear. Liquid supplied through a pipe 16 escapes in part with a valve on a stem 19a, Fig. 3, while the remainder passes to the top of the cylinder, a pressure relief valve 21 being provided. The piston 8 has a hollow extension formed with a port 14 through which liquid escapes when the piston is depressed so that the port is free of a sleeve 5. The valve stem 19a may be actuated by an arm 44, Fig. 6, carrying a pinion engaging freely mounted sectors 46, 47, one of which is rockable by hand, and the other by a foot pedal; the latter may be a vehicle accelerator pedal in which case a member of the connecting linkage is slotted so that the pedal depression does not affect the valve until the full acceleration position is exceeded. If desired, a separate valve-operating pedal may be provided located close to the accelerator pedal which serves as a pivot for the foot. The position of the sleeve 5 is determined by an arm 25 on a shaft 26 having an arm 27 acted on by a spring 29, so that it follows a settable arm 28 loose on the shaft. In order that low gear shall be obtained whenever the transmission gear is in neutral, or reverse, the main transmission lever is connected to a link 41 slotted at 40 to engage a pin on the arm 27, and to a similar link for acting on an arm on the stem 19a. In a modified form, an arm 51 connected to the accelerator or other pedal is provided instead of or in addition to the arm 28.
