Abstract

1,235,566. Change-speed control. G.K.N. BIRFIELD TRANSMISSIONS Ltd. 16 June, 1969 [19 June, 1968], No. 29103/68. Heading F2D. A motor-vehicle transmission having the usual C.S.G. 11 connected via a clutch 12 to an I.C. engine 10 includes a two-speed auxiliary gear 13 manually pre-selected by a steering- column mounted lever and rod 34, 35 connected to a change-over valve 29 for controlling a vacuum-servo 17 operably connected via linkwork 18-20 to the auxiliary gear 13, the vacuum-servo 17 being connected to engine manifold depression 23 for establishment of one or other pre-selected ratio of the auxiliary gear on disengaging movement, i.e. depression of the clutch pedal 21. The vacuum-servo 17 is connected via ducts 30, 31 and the change-over valve 29 to a valve 25 the clutch pedal camoperated plunger 26 of which opens the valve 25, on clutch pedal depression, to connect engine manifold depression to the change-over valve 29, which valve has shift plungers 32, 33, controlled by a rockable arm 37, manually pre-selected by the lever and rod 35, 34, pivotable between two positions, to connect either duet 31 or 30 to vacuum, the other duct being automatically vented to atmosphere, for selection of one or other auxiliary gear ratio, the manual preselecting lever 35 being spring-biased at 42 back to a central position. The appropriate auxiliary ratio setting is indicated by panels 40, 41 illuminated via switches 39, 140 operated by the vacuum-servo link 20.
