Abstract

953,145. Change-speed control. AUSTIN MOTOR CO. Ltd. Feb. 12, 1963 [Jan. 25, 1962], No. 2813/62. Heading F2D. [Also in Division B7] The control mechanism of a change-speed gear in a motor car &c. comprises master cylinders and slave units of the type including flexible rolling diaphragms, the usual gear-shift lever operating the master cylinders and a separate pipe connecting each cylinder to its associated slave unit, the slave units acting to effect ratio establishing &c. movements of selectors within the gear. In one form, the usual gear-shift lever 1, Fig. 2, can be pivoted in one plane to engage its depending end 6 with one or other of three notches 5 in parallel double-acting pistons 2-4 extending into master cylinders 8, Fig. 1. Flexible diaphragms 7 se the pistons with respect to the cylinders, which are connected by pipes 18-23 to slave units 7A at the opposite ends of selector rods 12-14. Flexible diaphragms 8A seal the selector rods relatively to the slave units, the selector rods carrying strikers 15-17. In one modification, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the pistons 2-4 are single acting, the set of master cylinders &c. at one end of the pistons being replaced by springs. Similarly, the selector rods are each slidden by a single slave unit acting against the bias of a spring. The master cylinder and slave unit springs are so balanced against each other that the gear is normally biased to its neutral condition. In another modification, the gearshift lever 1, Fig. 7, is moved in one plane to operate a single master cylinder 30 incorporating a flexible diaphragm 7 and connected by a pipe 31 to a single slave unit 32 incorporating a flexible diaphragm 7A. The slave unit 32 slides a shaft 33 axially against the bias of a spring 34 to engage a selector finger 35 in one or other of the usual notches in selector rods 36-38. Pivoting the gearshift lever 1 in the perpendicular plane operates two similar master cylinders 39, 39A connected by pipes 42, 43 to two slave units 8A, having flexible diaphragms 7A and operating through an arm 49 to turn the shaft 33 together with the finger 35, thus establishing the selected ratio. The pipes 18 &c. may be flexible and the gearshift lever 1 may be mounted upon the driver's door of the motor car &c. Specification 735,664 is referred to.
