Abstract

969,417. Change-speed control. AUSTIN MOTOR CO. Ltd. Sept. 4, 1963 [Oct. 23, 1962], No. 40016/62. Heading F2D. Change-speed remote control mechanism for use with a motor car gear-box comprises double-acting piston type master cylinders connected by pipes to selector and ratio establishing slave units within the gear-box, the pistons in the master cylinders being operable by a gearshift lever and carrying at their ends coaxial annular valve washers serving to control flow of liquid between the pipes and a reservoir of liquid. In one form, a gear shift lever 1, Figs. 1, 2, is integral with two arms 5, 6 each engaging slots 7 in the pistons 8, 9 of two master cylinders arranged at right angles to each other. Pipes 17, 18 connect the spaces at the ends of the piston 9 with a double-acting slave unit 20 fast with a shaft 21 reciprocated thereby to engage a selector finger 23 with one of three gear strikers 24-26. Pipes 31, 32 connect the spaces at the ends of the piston 8 with a double-acting slave unit 30 connected with an arm 28 splined on the shaft 21 and operative to rotate the latter, thus sliding the selected gear striker 24, &c. to establish a ratio. Valve washers 13 loose on spigots 14 on the master pistons open axial grooves 16 along the pistons to connect the pipes 17, &c. with a reservoir 12 of liquid. When the gearshift lever 1 is pivoted in one plane, the arm 6 reciprocates the piston 9 to operate the slave unit 20 and engage the selector finger 23 with a desired striker 24, &c., the piston 8 remaining stationary. As soon as the piston 9 moves, the valve washer 13 at the operative end of the piston shuts-off the pipe 17, 18 from the reservoir 12. When ratio selection has been effected, establishment is obtained by pivoting the gearshift lever in a perpendicular plane. The piston 9 now remains stationary, but the piston 8 is slidden along its cylinder to operate the slave unit 30. In a modification, two master cylinders containing pistons 8A, 9A, Figs. 3, 4, are arranged at right angles and one below the other. Two rectangular cages 33, 34 connect the depending end 1B of a gearshift lever 1A with the pistons 8A, 9A. When the gearshift lever 1A is pivoted in one plane the cage 34 and the piston 8A move, while the cage 33 and the piston 9A remain stationary. When the gearshift lever 1A is pivoted in the perpendicular plane, the cage 34 and the piston 8A remain stationary, while the cage 33 and the piston 9A move. As before, the pistons 8A, 9A are provided with axial grooves leading to a reservoir 12A and closed by loose valve washers at their ends. Specification 735,664 is referred to.
