Abstract

398,497. Collecting leakage-oil from bearings. WALTON, T. K., Woodside, Birchwood Road, St. Anne's, and KING- STON, E. G., Clare Street House, both in Bristol. March 9, 1932, No. 7042. [Class 12 (i).] The web 36 of an engine crank shaft has, on the face adjacent a main bearing 24, an outwardly extending knife-edge projection 50 which projects oil escaping from the bearing on to a baffle 51 shielding the cylinder. The projection 50 may be of sheet metal, or integral with the crank-web, or inclined out of a radial plane, and the baffle 51 may have an inturned edge to form a gutter leading oil back to the crank-case. The baffle may be semi-circular or, as shown, it may extend completely round the crank shaft and have drain-holes 53. In the case of a multi-cylinder engine, oil-throwing projections may be formed on the web connecting an adjacent pair of crank-pins, and the baffles may be secured to a bracket depending from the engine casing. In a modification, the oil-throwing knife-edge 65, Fig. 10, is formed by inclining the edge 64 of the web 63, and the baffle 69 is integral with the engine crank case. The baffle 69 may be extended as at 70 so as to catch oil thrown by the big-end 30 of the connecting-rod on its up stroke. Ribs may be formed on the interior of the baffles 69 to assist oil thrown thereon to move towards the end faces of the crank-case.
