Abstract
398,196. Hair-waving appliances. PEYROLE, G., 11, Rue Henri Monnier, Paris. March 3, 1932,No. 6418. [Class 131.] Hair-waving apparatus of the kind in which the wound tress is treated with steam comprises a casing in which the curler 11 is adapted to be axially mounted, the casing consisting of a fixed part-tubular member 1 and a concentric part-tubular member 4 rotatably mounted thereon, means being provided for alternatively supplying steam and cold air to the casing and for draining away water of condensation. The member 1 is secured at one end to a socket 2 carried by the handle 3, and is provided at the other end with a ring 17 to which is secured one end of a spiral spring 16. The other end of the spring 16 is attached to a member 15 secured to the member 4, the spring being adapted to maintain the two members of casing normally in the closed position. The curler 11, which may be of the shape shown in Fig. 1, or may consist of a cylindrical rod provided with enlarged cylindrical ends, is provided at one end with a pin engaging in a recess in a perforated disc 18 carried by the socket 2, and at the other end is formed with a rectangular recess adapted to be engaged by a longitudinally movable pin 10 carried by a knob 9. In a recess in the knob 9 is fixed a flat spring 13 which acts on a pawl 14 coacting with teeth 15a on the rear of the member 15. When the knob is turned in the direction in which the pawl slides over the teeth, the curler is rotated to wind the hair thereon, and when rotated in the opposite direction the member 4 is rotated relatively to the member 1 to close the casing, the root of the tress being gripped between strips 5, 6 secured to the edges of the member 1, 4. To hold the member 4 of the casing in the closed position, it is provided with abutments 8, Fig. 3, engaged by cams 7 carried on a shaft 29 rotatably mounted in bearings on the outside of the casing. Passages for the supply of steam and cold air and for the return of the water of condensation are provided in the end of the socket 2, the passages for steam and cold air being alternatively closed by a ported pivoted obturator 19. The passages are connected by flexible tubes 24, 25, 26 passing through the handle 3 to a union member provided with nipples engaging in one of a series of sets of sockets in a distribution board connected to the steam and cold air supplies and to a return pipe for the water of condensation. In order to protect the scalp from injury, the casing is provided with a comb 22, Fig. 3, adapted to engage the root of the tress, the comb being secured to a perforated tube 23 through which cold air is supplied between the comb and the casing.
