The invention relates to hair curling and waving devices. It is' frequently desirable to have a portion of the locker tress curled with the remainder waved, and the chief object of the invention is. to provide means whereby this can be accomplishedneatly eite-ctively and vith facility. Another object of the invention is an improvedvmeans for use in connection with the curling and waving device to treat the curled and waved tress so that the curled ad waved eiiect produced by the instrument will become fixed or permanent so called. Other objects will apirom the following disclosure.

The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described. the features of novelty being finally claimed.

In the views 10 designates the curling rod and 11 the concave clamping blade cooperating by longitudinal association with the curling rod. The said curling rod and concave blade are each provided with a finger piece and are hinged together, as shown, in spreading relation upon a pin 12 around which is a coil spring having extended'ends engaging the finger pieces to clamp the two members together after a tress has been curled in spiral fashion about the curling rod.

Hinged to the outer opposite ends of the pin 12 in nesting fashion is a plurality of longitudinally concaved blades 13 adapted to be opened and closed on said pin 12 somewhat like the ribs of a collapsible fan said rods 13 being shown in Figs. 1 and 2 as being in a partially opened or separated state.

When a tress of hair, near the scalp. has been wound around the curling rod from the hinged end outward and clamped thereto the remainder oi the tress can be Woven back and forth betweenthe successive concave blades; or it can be woven around one or more of the blades after the latter has been closed down on the curling elements. The

device is capable of varied use according to the length of the hair and the effect to be produced. 1

After the tress has been applied to the curling and waving elements or either of theniit can be given a treatment of moisture and heat, an appropriate solution of ammonia together with borax being employed I to impart permanence or stability to the curled or waved hair. The heating device for doing this consists of two metallic covers 0: containers 1% hinged together upon a pin 15 so as to fold together like the halves of aboolr. Springs 16 are provided tending to holdthese containers yieldingly together. The container members of the heater are provided with projecting finger pieces 17 riveted thereto near the middles of the outer sides of the container members at their hinged portions so that said container portions can be conveniently separated by suitable pressure of the thumb and finger of the hand. The inner sides of the container members are equipped with electrical heating elements 18 fixed therein, they being suitably insulated and each having electrical conductors leading thereto so that they can be energized through an ordinary attachment to an ordinary lamp socket (not shown).

In practice when the tress has been taken up in the curling and waving instrument there is Wrapped about it one or more pads of cotton or other suitable fibrous material 20 moistened with a solution of ammonia and sprinkled with borax, the pad thus treated being wrapped in a suitable paper (not shown). The instrument thus prepared is inserted between the opened leaves or sides of the heater so that when said sides are re leased the pad and the contained instrument and tress are held while another tress is being prepared in the same way, After all the tresses to be treated are gathered up in the necessary number of instruments and heaters the current is turned on and the heat applied for from, say six to fourteen minutes according as may be necessary by reason of the susceptibilityoi the hair to fixation by the treatment. The release of the tresses after this treatment is quite simple because after the curling and waving instrumentis removed from the heater and the pad removed CE as:

the instrument can be withdrawn from the I usual manipulation.

The forms 01 the parts can be changed without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.

vVhat I claim is:

1. Means for curling and waving 'hair comprising a curling rod a longitudinally concaved blade cooperating therewith and a plurality of longitudinally concaved blades in hinged relation to said curling rod and in superposed nesting relation to one another whereby a tress curled on the rod can be waved by the plurality of blades.

2. Means for curling and waving hair comprising a curling instrument and a plurality of longitudinally concaved blades in hinged relation to said curling instrument whereby a tress curled on the instrument can be waved by the plurality of blades.

3. Means for curling and waving hair comprising a curling instrument, a plurality of longitudinally concaved blades in hinged relation to the curling instrument Whereby atress curled on the instrument can be waved by the plurality of'blades and a heater for thetress and instrument consisting of a pair of clamping covers having electric heating elements therein.
