Abstract

In emulsifying-apparatus wherein materials in a bowl or container 4, Fig. 1, mounted on a cylinder 2 is drawn into the cylinder through a valve, such as a ball-valve 5, by a piston 1, <PICT:0397621/III/1> <PICT:0397621/III/2> emulsification is effected by passage of the materials through a leakage path 3, between the cylinder and piston and restricted to a small part of the circumferences thereof. The leakage path may be formed by a flat on the piston or a groove in the cylinder and may be furnished with obstructions 3<1> comprising transverse or substantially transverse grooves and ridges. As shown, the cylinder is pivoted at the end 2<1> and the emulsified materials pass out through a lateral passage 8. In a modification the cylinder is pivoted in a vertical position to a base plate to which a hand-lever is also pivoted, the upper end projecting into the container from which materials are drawn through a cylinder port, uncovered by the piston and remote from the leakage path. The emulsified materials are delivered through a cylinder port connected to a delivery pipe. In a further modification a receiving chamber for emulsified materials is mounted above a vertical stationary cylinder and the piston-rod passes through the chamber and a cover therefor and is reciprocated by a hand-lever pivoted to a link on the chamber. The piston-rod may be rigid with the piston or may have a rounded end engaging a recess in the piston; in the latter case the piston is spring-returned and the piston-rod may be pivoted to or loosely engage a recess in, the hand-lever, which is directly pivoted to the chamber. The container is mounted by the side of the cylinder and communicates with a piston-controlled inlet port therein by a lateral passage; a stirring plate is suspended in the container by a wire connected to the outer end of the hand-lever. In a further modification a vertical pivoted cylinder has a preferably flexible suction tube employed to withdraw emulsifiable materials from any ordinary container; the tube may be connected to a cylinder port or to a valve-controlled inlet in the end of the cylinder. As shown in Fig. 8, the cylinder 2 has a tubular extension 23 carrying an inlet valve 5 and a perforated disc-like foot 24. The cylinder is mounted in any container 26 for emulsifiable materials which may be maintained in admixture by the action of the member 24 on vertical movement of the whole apparatus. The hand-lever 11 is pivoted to the piston at 13 and to a link 15 on the cylinder. Emulsified materials are delivered through a pipe 8. A bracket arm 25 secured to the cylinder extends beneath the lever 11 and prevents overturning of the apparatus. In the two last-described constructions the restricted leakage path 3 may be replaced by an extended leakage path formed by making the piston a loose fit in the cylinder as described in Specification 285,159, [Class 81 (i), Disinfecting &c.]. In all modifications the pistons may be mechanically instead of hand-actuated.
