[Class 38 (v).] Magnetic blow-outs.-A structure for placing over the fixed contacts 10, 11 adapted to be bridged by a roller 12 which is reciprocable within an insulating sheath 15, as shown. or by a wedge-shaped contact, comprises a series of spaced plates 1 of refractory insulating material, each having recesses 19 leading substantially tangentially into a circular portion. The series is assembled between arcing plates 2, 3 which may be of magnetic material or backed by magnetic plates 4, 5, and insulating end plates 6, 7. A magnetic bolt 22 within an insulating sleeve 23 supports a series of refractory insulating washers 24, spaced apart by discs 25 so as to be in alignment with the plates 1 and define an annular passage 26, around which an arc will be propelled under the action of the magnetic field between the plates 4, 5. The washers 24 may, alternatively, be of metal, and the distance pieces 25 may be of magnetic material, both washers and discs being split and suitably insulated from one another. The spaces 35 between the plates 1 serve to ventilate the arc. The plates 2, 3 may be slotted as at 27, Fig. 5, to keep the arc terminals moving, and they may have metal discs 30 with radial slots 32 riveted to them at 31 and spaced by an insulating disc to provide a two-turn coil. The plate 30 may, alternatively, be substituted by a flat coil.
