Abstract

[Class 38 (v)] [See also Group XXXVI] Magnetic blow - outs comprise an iron or steel core l with an insulating and heat-resisting surround m mounted by means of an insulating base o on a brass terminal n. A coil j comprising four parallelconnected coaxial windings is connected at one end to n and at the other, by means not shown, to a fixed socket contact-member a. An insulating cylinder g carrying an iron or steel shell p for the return path of the flux, serves as the mounting for an insulated metal ring h spaced from a to provide an air chamber i and of a bore slightly larger than that of a, so that the movable plug contact-member c when engaging a does not engage h. Contact c comprises cylindrical segments screwed at f to a tapered part d and surrounded by springs e which serve to press the free ends of the segments outwards. When a, c are in engagement a radial field is set up in i, which field, when c has separated from a and before it leaves h, whirls the arc in i and extinguishes it. The ring h is chosen of sufficient thickness to ensure extinction of the arc before c separates from it, the time on an A.C. circuit being not less than a half-cycle. For high voltages, several gaps in series may be formed by arranging insulated rings or washers coaxially and in spaced relationship.
