396,120. Road signals for controlling traffic. MELVIN, T. S. F., 4, Ross Gardens, Edinburgh. Feb. 6, 1932, No. 3564. [Class 118 (ii).] In road signals for controlling traffic of the kind wherein a number of auxiliary lights are successively lighted to indicate the proportion of time still to elapse before the main colour signal again changes, the auxiliary lights may comprise a series of red lamps d arranged in a compartmented casing around the main red signal lamp a, and a similar series of green lamps f around the main green lamp c. In a modification, Fig. 2, the main signal lights comprise red, green, and amber lamps arranged in pairs in a single compartmented casing g which is surrounded by a compartmented casing h housing a single amber lamp j and eleven pairs of auxiliary lamps i, one lamp of each pair being red and one green. When the main lamps are lighted, the small lamps of each pair of the corresponding colour begin to light up successively. The lamp casing may have one or two aspects. Instead of a single amber lamp j, there may be an amber lamp associated with each pair of auxiliary green and red lamps. Additional signals may be simultaneously displayed by the lamp casings k. A rotating switch contact arm is used.
