[Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii).] Water-gas produced in the uprunning of a generator a mixed with coal gas from a superimposed retort flows through a pipe h to a recuperator d where it is heated prior to passing through an additional coal chamber b. The recuperator is heated by the combustion of water gas produced by downrunning the generator after an up-run, the products of combustion flowing through the stack pipe d<1> to waste. The generator may be up-run, after blasting, with steam admitted at an inlet l to a recuperator c. In a modified plant, the additional coal chamber b is arranged within the recuperator d.
