Abstract

395,082. Opening folded sheets for stitching. POLLAK, J. E., 20, Holborn, London.- (Brehmer, Geb.; Plagwitz, Leipsic, Germany.) March 5, 1932, No. 6716. [Classes 89 (iii) and 112.] Folded sheets or signatures S are opened by passing them between inversely-rotating suction-rolls 20, 21 with which are associated needles 25, 26 adapted to penetrate the leaves of the signature so that all of the leaves are positively engaged and opened outward each to its respective side of the fold. The needles 25, 26 are fixed to blocks 27, 28 slidable transversely in the rolls 20, 21 and normally held with the needles retracted by springs 13, 14, A cut-away part 28a of each block limits the movement of the blocks by engagement with the shaft 22, 23 of the respective roll. A camplate 17 is provided to engage the outer end 28b of each block 27, 28 and cause the needles to project and engage the signature at the required times. The cam 17 is adjustable circumferentially on a bracket 16 which is itself adjustable towards or away from the roll by a micrometer set-screw 18 so as to vary the amount by which the needles are projected. One roll only may be provided with a needle and a series of needles may be mounted on each roll. A groove 19 is provided in each cam 17 to accommodate the point of the needle if for any reason it is not retracted.
