Abstract
394,639. Destructive distillation of shale, torbanite, &c. LENSVELT, M. W., 147, President Street, Johannesburg, South Africa. Sept. 21, 1931, No. 26352. Convention date, Sept. 27, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 55 (ii).] In the production of oil by the distillation of coal, shale, torbanite, or the like below 600‹ C. the occurrence of tarry matters, free carbon, ammonia, or sulphur compounds in the oils is prevented by the addition of an alkali such as caustic soda, or an alkaline earth as lime, to which sodium carbonate may be added. The carbonaceous material is ground to pass through a 20 mesh screen, and is treated for example with a slurry of quicklime having an addition of sodium carbonate, the adherent water being evaporated before the material is passed into the retort.
