A composite building block or slab comprises a natural coloured slate to which a cement backing is applied. The facing may be protected as by a covering of soft soap, brown paper or other sheet material which is removed after the cement has set. The slates &c. are assembled on the protective covering in the base of a mould, in close juxtaposition, the joints being initially cemented, after which the cement backing mixture is filled in. A porous covering of preformed breeze blocks, or of crushed breeze may be applied to the backing. According to a modification, the slates &c. may be pressed on to the moulded block.
