Abstract
Finely ground tricalcium phosphate is treated with sulphuric acid in amount theoretically necessary to convert it into dicalcium phosphate, a mixture of mono-, di-, and tricalcium phosphates being actually produced. The acid should be of such concentration as to produce a moist crumbly mixture, and must be in sufficient quantity also to react with compounds other than tricalcium phosphate occurring in the mineral. For Nauru phosphate, a specific gravity of 1,39-1,4, or, according to the Provisional Specification, 1,3, may be employed. The mixture may be passed to a den, or over one or a plurality of successive conveyer belts in a chamber wherein fumes evolved are removed by an air current. The cooled product passes to a storage chamber, and may be subsequently ground. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 5363/83, [Class 1, Acids, alkalies, &c.].
