Abstract

393,076. Pistons. SCHIEP, W., 42, Freiburgerstrasse, Breslau, Germany. May 18, 1932, No. 14178. [Class 122 (i).] The thrust faces of a light metal piston are bounded by slots d, e and are secured at their mid points to a ring, or segments f of a ring, of material of a lower coefficient of expansion whereby the expansion of the thrust faces is directed circumferentially. The ring is cast into the piston above the gudgeon pin bosses, and the ends h of the segments may be perforated or provided with teeth to ensure a rigid connection. A second complete or divided ring may be arranged below the bosses. The peripheries of the rings have grooves of rectangular or dovetail section to engage corresponding ribs in the thrust faces. The piston skirt may have a further slit i and the slits may be produced during casting.
