[Class 38 (iii).] Auxiliary switches 11, 12 and 13, 14 are closed when a drum controller is moved in a forward or reverse direction respectively, by means of a member 4 carrying a co-operating contact 10 and frictionally driven by a member 3 rotated with the controller shaft 2. The auxiliary switches are in the circuit of a selfmaintaining main contactor and are opened by any reverse movement of the controller towards the " off " position, so that the circuit is never broken at the drum contacts. The closing circuit of the main contactor may be completed at the first forward or reverse position of the controller, by closing the appropriate auxiliary switch, and the maintaining circuit passes through the closed auxiliary switch and is independent of the position of the controller, so that when the main contactor opens, either as the result of a backward movement of the controller or the operation of an overload relay, it can be reclosed only by first returning the controller to the first forward or reverse position and closing the appropriate auxiliary switch. The controller is described as applied for running a series motor up to speed, and reversing its direction of rotation, a brake solenoid and a blow-out coil being provided.
