392,314. Road signals for controlling traffic. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.- (Assignees of Beyer, C. F., 1841, Broad way, Fort Wayne. Indiana, U.S.A.) Feb. 29, 1932, No. 6107. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1931. [Class 118 (ii).] The cycle of timers for traffic-signalling systems is changed by means of variable-speed gearing electrically-controllable from a distant point or points. The gearing comprises a set of gears 8 fixed on a shaft 6 driven by an electric motor 3, a set 15, 16, 17 fixed on a driven shaft 18, and two sets 9 and 12, 13, 14 constantly meshing with the driving and driven sets respectively. The latter two sets are mounted loosely on a parallel countershaft 10, each gear of one set being clutched successively to each gear of the other set by axial movement of the countershaft 10 itself, which carries three spring-keys 27, Fig. 2, and a single spring- key 30, the latter remaining in engagement with the internallv slotted boss of each of the wheels 12, 13, 14 whilst a key 27 clutches any of the wheels of the other set 9, providing twelve ratios in all. The countershaft-wheels are separated by spacing collars and are prevented from axial movement by shaft-supporting bearings 11. The end of the shaft 10 is formed as a rack engaged by a pinion 34 rotated stepby-step in either direction to change speed by either of two oppositely-acting pawls 39 moved forwardly, by an amount limited by a fixed stop rod 46, under the influence of electromagnets 43 energized by switches which may be controlled automatically or manually. The pawls are returned by springs 45.
