Abstract

Gears (1 to 7) of a cluster (A) are selectively connected to drive an output shaft (D) at varying speeds by means of a selector coupling (Z), splined on the output shaft and to any one gear of the cluster. The selector coupling is moved axially to engage with a given gear of the cluster by virtue of being mounted on a sliding tube (G) having a linear gear engageable by a gear wheel (K). <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS TO TRANSMISSION SELECTOR SYSTEMS.
This invention relates to a transmission selector system.
The seiection method of a multi-spead transmission system involves several moving jpartes Usually each speed being ammompaniad by its dwn individual selection device with a function to engage and disongage a gear by a variaty of means as and when required. Such systems can have limitations especially whan size and weight are considerations, also speed of selection and mdtiple speed requirements from a single range.
The principal object of this invention is the use of a single assembly to angage, disengage and coupla tha selection of speads the transmisaion has to offer and in this way take advantage of a siapler construction and lower production coat.
According to the present invention there is provided a transmission solector syoten comprising a pair of intermechlng gear ciusters, une mathined form molid the other ande up of segareis geefs. En catput chef that passes within these geers and a celechor davice with seans to couple these geare intornally to the seid output chaft to effect a aulti-speed trensmission system.
A specifice embodiment of the invention will be destribad by example with referenme to the ammompanying drmsings in which : Sigure One represents a plan view of a transmiesion assambly mith selector coupling in neutral position.
Figure Two represents a plan view of a transmission assombly with selcter coupling in engaged position.
Referring to figure one the assembly comprises two intermeshing gear clustere A and B. B is of solid construction and forms an input shaft mith bearings M and N at each end. An imput device de located at position P. A is the output cluster and is mede up of separate gears sach with a protruding journal that inter lochs and terd en the neighbouring gear. These gearsn have a common laternal spline with a neutral space between them to facilitata easy @@icction when the chafts are in motion also to provant mon- then ane speed being engsged at ont time.
The gears at each end of this cluster are borne independently and there is an intermediate bearing at position T. A splined shaft D is situated in the centre of cluster A with an output at point V and borne at the other end internally at S in an exension pieme R that is secured to the outer housing.
A selector coupling Z splined both internally to the output shaft D and externally to the centre of each of the gears 1-6 is attached via a thrust race to a sliding tube G. This tube has gear teath cut along one side of its langth and is a sliding fit on extension piece R. Gear wheel K is engaged with the teeth of the tube and can be rotated in stages in either direction. A detent devine is sited at position H.
Power is imtroduced to the transmission at point X and the solid gear cluster B rotates between bearings M and N. The gears of cluster A are in comstant mesh with the gears of cluster B and are rotated at speede respective to their individual ratios. The selestion is made when gear wheel K is caused to rotate in one direction or other. This gear whael is in mesh with linear gear 3 and will alide the tube/coupling Z in or out in stages to take up Brive with the required speed.
In figure one the selection coupling Z is in neutral positral position as it is not angaged with any of the gears 1-8.
In figure two the selection coupling Z is moved to engaqe mith inner spline of gear 4 , thus the power is transmitted from B through gear 4, through the selector compling and en to the output shaft at Y.
The speed of qutput Y (given a constant speed at x) will vary according to which of the gears in cluster A has been selected.
