Abstract

392,087. Uniting by fusion. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(General Electric Co. ; Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Nov. 3, 1932, No. 31047. [Class 83 (iv).] In welding - apparatus for the longitudinal seams of pipes in which the work is clamped between upper jaws 19 extending on each side of the seam and a lower backing member 18 arranged inside the pipe 10, the beam 13 carrying the backing member is supported at its ends and is reinforced at an intermediate point by a stirrup 24 which is suspended from the beams 11, 12 carrying the jaws 19. The invention is shown applied to the pipe-welding machine described in Specification 246,795, [Class 83 (iv), Metals, Working], the intermediate support being necessary when the beam 13 has to pass through a pipe of small diameter. The stirrup 24 is removably carried from supports 27, 30 on the beams 11, 12 by a hinge 26 and a hook 28. The beam 13 bears against a spacer bar 23 to which pressure is transmitted through the pipe by a block 22 and screw 25. The hook 28 is connected with the bar 24 by an eccentric clamp 31 operated by a handle 32.
