Abstract
391,121. Coating confections with sugar &c. BAKER PERKINS, Ltd., Hythe Road, Willesden, London. Oct. 14, 1931, No. 28585. Convention date, Jan. 12. [Class 28 (i).] Confections are coated with sugar or the like by affording them a trajectory or free fall into or through a shower of coating material whereby they become coated in their flight. This coating may comprise the complete coating of the confections, or may be a preliminary to a secondary coating in the usual mixing drum. The individual coating of the confections whilst in the air prevents them from sticking together and producing scrap as is usual. In Fig. 4 the confections are carried on a conveyer 9 through a moistening chamber and are dropped into the mixing drum 1 through a shower of sugar projected from a nozzle 14a in communication with the sugar supply hopper 8a and the fan 15. The mixing drum 1 has an unperforated end 1a and helical flights 2 which lead the confections to a perforated part of the drum through which excess sugar drops into a collecting receptacle from which it is elevated by a bucket conveyer and re-delivered to the hopper 8a. In Fig. 5 the confections are delivered from the conveyer 9 on to a high speed rotary roller 11 which projects them substantially horizontally through the sugar shower S<11> on to a screen 16 through which excess sugar drops. In this case the coating is completed as the confections pass through the shower. In a modification in which a rotary mixer 1 is used, the sugar is allowed to drop from a hopper projecting into the end of the drum and the confections are thrown through the shower by a high speed roller 1] positioned close to the conveyer 9. Instead of a single shower, a number of showers may be used and the shower may be produced by a perforated rotary drum, or by projecting the sugar upwardly from the mass in the mixing drum by means of compressed air. Alternatively, the mixing drum may have baffles which lift the sugar from the lower parts of the drum and drop it over the entering confections.
