690,855. Mixing appliances. PONISCH, M. July 16, 1951, No. 16820/51. Class 86 A mixing and refining machine, in particular for cocoa and chocolate pastes, comprises a basin-like casing 1 jacketed for temperature control and including a concentrically arranged cylindrical chamber 2 having openings 5 near the bottom, a vertical driven shaft 10 extending through the chamber and carrying a propeller 12 which causes the paste to circulate upwardly through the chamber and secured to the top of the shaft 10 a cover plate 6 provided with paddle wheel blades 7 overlapping the chamber 2 and having a central opening 8 over which the mouth of a fresh air supply pipe 9 opens. The paste impelled upwardly through the chamber 2 is driven by the blades 7 against the cover plate 6 from which the paste is thrown outwardly as a mist and air entering the opening 8 is also driven outwardly in a layer below the paste mist to sweep through the paste mist before escaping through the top of the machine. The blades 7 are at a sharp angle to the cover plate 6 and have slits provided in them close underneath the cover plate which effect some rubbing down and refining action as the paste passes through them and cause uniform distribution of the paste over the plate 6. Further refining members, for example round or oval rods or propellers, may be provided on the shaft 10 between the paddle 6, 7 and propeller 12. Scrapers 17, 18 are supported on the air pipe 9 which is rotatably driven through a chain drive from the driven shaft 15.
