APPARATUS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF LEAD OXIDE.

This invention relates to oxide pots in which molten lead is converted into lead oxide by a current of steam or air or both, within the pot, whilst the molten lead is maintained in a state of agitation by a stirrer or agitator.
These oxide pots are constructed with stirrers or agitators or boaters mounted in and act upon the material in the pot, and with apertures and packing glands in the sides through which the rotary agitator shafts pass. The pot becomes filled with dense masses of oxide dust which tends to penetrate into the glands within which the shaft rotates, with the result that the packings of the glands become choked and inoperative, and the fine dusty material is carried by the revolving shaft past the packed glands into the open air to the great detriment to thev health of the operatives. Moreover the renewal of these glands is a very expensive item. I
According to this invention the glands and their packing become unnecessary and are dispensed with, and the apertures through which the shaft passes are enclosed by boxes with an air chamber into which a fluid air or steam or both is drivenor forced from the outside to cause a constant air current around the shaft. into the interior of the pot which prevents any outward flow of oxide dust, and as there are no clogged -packings to cause friction on the rotar shaft, the power required to drive the sha t is very greatly reduced.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
The oxide pot may be of ordinary construction such as described in Innes U. S. Patent No. 1,113,123.

According to the inventionover the exterior of each aperture (1, an enclosed box or cover D is fitted and secured provided with an air chamber E with an inlet e to which a pipe for the admission of air or steam or both is attached. The side of the box is covered by a plate F to which a flexible washer f of leather, rubber or other material is affixed, to make an air-tight joint between it and the shaft B.
Air or steam or both is forced-into the chamber E through the inlet e in the in- -terior of the box D and through the aperture a around the shaft B into the interior of the pot.
p The current of air or steam or both is taken into the chamber E in box D so that the lead oxide following the revolving shaft 1n an endeavour to escape from the pot, comes in contact with the entering air or steam or both passing into the pot around the shaft B and is driven thereby back into the pot and prevented from escaping to the open a1r.
The current of air or steam or both forced along the shaft B into the ot is at once caught up by the revolving beaters of the agitator C which thereupon act as a fan, and distribute the air inside the pot evenly and uniformly, whereby the qua-ltity and quantity of oxide produced is more easily controlled and increased than would be the case where air and/or steam to enter at any other given point where the centrifugal action of the beaters would be less pronounced.
The shaft B may be provided with a cutter, blade or a scraper, which keeps the aperture 1; clear and free from leady material which mighttend to solidify and choke it; such material as is removed by the cutter or scraper comes in contact with the incomin current of air and is carried back again into the pot. v
