Abstract

The wetting properties of alkaline solutions used for the treatment of natural and artificial cellulosic fibres, yarns or fabrics are improved by the addition of phenolic fractions boiling between 205-290 DEG C. obtained from low temperature tars, vertical retort or producer gas tars or tars from wood, peat or lignite. In examples: (1) fractions of low temperature tars boiling at 225-235 DEG C. and at 180-230 DEG C. are added to 26 per cent caustic soda; (2) low temperature phenols are mixed with petrol and topped to 230 DEG C. before being added to a caustic soda lye. The relative wetting times for various fractions of the higher phenols are tabulated.
