Abstract

Plastic compositions comprise a filler and non-cellulosic organic material derived from the spent liquors of alkaline reaction of the soda and sulphate processes of digestion of fibrous material such as wood and serving as a thermoplastic binder. The spent liquors from the sulphite process of digestion of fibrous material may also be used as a source of the organic material provided these liquors are first treated to remove objectionable sulphur compounds by adding sufficient alkali to give the liquor a pH value of 12-13 and heating under pressure. The organic material may be separated from the spent liquors by electrolysis or by a chemical treatment, e.g. by treating the liquors with alkali-neutralizing agents to give the liquor a pH p value of 8-9 as described in Specification 460,885, [Group IV]. The composition may comprise 20-70 per cent filler; fillers specified are wood flour, asbestos, carbon black, kieselguhr, barytes and rotten stone. Other thermoplastic binders, e.g. shellac or gum copal, or thermosetting binders, e.g. phenol formaldehyde resins, may also be incorporated.
