Abstract
128,464. Rinman, E. L. Aug. 30, 1918. Retting; fibres, obtaining. - Flax, jute, rape, and pine-apple leaves &c. are treated for from three to five hours and at a temperature of at least 90‹ C., and preferably at 100‹ C., with a waste liquor obtained from a previous treatment of the same or other vegetable substances with potassium or sodium hydrate, the liquor being concentrated to a sp. gr. of 1.074 to 1.1. The liquor should contain from 0.2 to 2.0 per cent of free alkali, but for treating flax, a lye containing more than 1 per cent of alkali should not be used. The temperature may be raised to 135‹ C. when two hours treatment will be sufficient. When starting the operation, a waste liquor may be obtained by boiling wood, straw &c. for three hours at a temperature of 100-120‹ C. with a solution containing 2¢ per cent of potassium or sodium hydrate. After washing and drying, the material is subjected to the usual mechanical treatment for obtaining fibres capable of being spun. When the liquor has become too concentrated, the soda or potash and also the extracted substances may be recovered therefrom by the process described in Specification 6652/12, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds other than &c.], whereby acetone, wood spirit, higher alcohols, ketones, oils, wax, ammonia, and amines are obtained.
