Abstract

390,156. Glasshouses. CARRINGTON, H. B., Station Approach, Battle, Sussex. Sept. 28, 1931, No. 26922. [Classes 20 (i) and 20 (iii).] The side of a glasshouse consists of a skeleton structure comprising metal rib members 10 which are secured in spaced relation by connecting members and extend from the base to the top ridge, each rib being shaped into a succession of flat relatively inclined portions 15 so that the panels 18 supported on the ribs are correspondingly inclined as shown in Fig. 1. The ribs 10 are formed of T-section metal and the panels 18 are adapted to be supported on the base flanges 17, Fig. 3.. Connecting members between adjacent ribs are provided at the ridge 19, base 11, and at the upper edge of the lowest panel 14 which is vertically disposed. The panels 18 are adapted to extend between adjacent ribs 10, and their adjacent longitudinal edges are inserted into a lead connection member 22 of H-section as shown in Fig. 9, and putty 23 may be employed. The panels 18 are adapted to be secured to the ribs 10 by copper clips bent over the base of the rib and enclosing the edges of the panels. The vertically-disposed base panels 14 are formed of metal and riveted to the members connecting the ribs 10. The glasshouse may be provided with one side member only or two side members inclined towards each other with the corresponding ribs 10 connected together at the ridge. A fanlight adapted to be placed adjacent the ridge comprises a Z-section frame 26, Fig. 4, which is arranged so that its base flange 27 is adapted to rest on the base flanges of the ribs 10 and also on the base flange 28 of a frame member 16 extending between the ribs 10. A glass panel 30 is secured in the frame 26 upon the base flange 27. In the closed position the flange 29 of the frame 26 is adapted to overlap the vertical flanges of the ribs 10 and frame member 16, The fanlight is adapted to pivot about the upper edge by means of studs 33 projecting downwardly from the flange 31 of a cross member 32. A retaining device for the fanlight comprises a toothed rack 34 pivoted on the fanlight and engaged by a member 36 on the member 16. A similar fanlight may be provided above the vertical panel 14. The end members of the house are also constructed of T-section members 54 as shown in Fig. 3, and a door consisting of Z-section frame members 40 with cross members 41 is hinged in position. Shelf brackets 46, Fig. 6, are provided with keyhole slots 49 in the portion 47 for engagement with studs 45 provided in the base flanges of the ribs 10. Alternatively, the brackets may be mounted in tubular members secured to the ribs 10. The Provisional Specification describes also (1) the use of wooden panels at the base ; (2) the provision of an angle-shaped or Z-shaped member along the ridge of the roof to overlap the joint at the ridge ; and (3) the formation of the sides of the fanlight by angle-shaped members.
