Abstract
389,874. Extruding coverings on electric cables &c. SMITH, W. S., Benchams, Newton Poppleford, Devon, and GARNETT, C. V. H., Woodhall, Woodland Rise, Sevenoaks, Kent. Sept. 30, 1931, No. 27231. [Class 87 (ii).] A machine for extruding thermoplastic material on wires, and particularly for covering joints in submarine signalling conductors &c. comprises a pair of clamps 6 in which a section of the conductor is secured and a die mounted in a fixed head, the die consisting of three or more preferably equal sectors which are secured in a housing comprising a fixed member and two members 14, 15, Fig. 2, hinged thereto at 13 and adapted to be clamped about the conductor when the latter has been positioned. The clamps 6 are mounted (one adjustably) on a slide 4 in a saddle 8 and motors 9, 12 are provided for positioning the conductor in the die and for traversing it therethrough. Small traversing movements are effected by a hand-wheel 11. The die sectors 25, 29, Fig. 3, form an annular channel 18 communicating with a supply orifice 19, Fig. 2, and plungers 21, Fig. 1, actuated by a hand-wheel, slide in the fixed block of the die housing to regulate the pressure. Similar plungers 23 also control the orifices 22.
