Abstract

771,830. Coating cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 9, 1955 [Feb. 10, 1954], No. 3929/54. Class 140. An applicator for applying one or more helical stripes of marking fluid to a cable comprises centrally throated bushing formed of two or more separable segmental parts held together by a sleeve of soft cellular rubber supported externally by a sleeve of selectively rigid material, one or more registering posts being provided in the sleeves and bushing. An applicator head, Fig. 1, comprises a bushing consisting of two separable parts 2, 3 having a bell-shaped mouth 5 extending to a part 6 having a diameter slightly greater than that of the cable and which leads to a part 7 of slightly greater diameter and then to a part 8 having a still greater diameter. The bushing is surrounded by a cellular rubber sleeve 11 which allows the parts of the bushing to separate to accommodate variations in thickness of the cable. The sleeve 11 is surrounded by a metal sleeve 13. Openings 17 in the sleeve 13 communicate with the marking fluid and with openings in the sleeve 11 and bushing. The sleeve 13 has a lower flange 21 in a recess in which rests a collar 10 of the bushing which is secured in position by a key. Each part of the bushing may be less than a semi circle. The internal surface of the bushing is highly polished.
