389,836. Variable-speed gearing. KENT, Ltd., G., 199, High Holborn, London, FLORY, H. G., 17, Blenheim Crescent, and COLEY, S. G., 110, Bishopscote Road, both in Luton. Sept. 24, 1931, No. 26661. [Class 80 (ii).] Variable-speed gearing comprises discs 7, 8 mounted side by side which rotate with cyclically varying speeds in alternating phase so that the faster-moving one drives through one-way balls 14 a hollow drum 12. This cyclic variation is caused by the relative eccentricity of a driving-shaft 6 which carries slotted arms 2, 3 engaged by pins 4, 5 extending from the discs 7, 8. The pin 5 from the farther disc 8 passes freely through a slot 9 in the nearer disc 7. To vary the speed of the driven drum 12, this eccentricity is varied. In the form shown, the shaft 6 is fixed in position and the drum 12 is loose upon a stub shaft 11 supported in a bracket arm 16 which is pivoted about an ultimately-driven shaft 19 and adjustable by thumb nuts 23 so as to carry the drum 12 across the end of the shaft 6. A gear 20 fast on the shaft 19 meshes with a gear 15 secured to the ratchet-driven drum 12. More than two ratchet-disc and slotted-arm sets may be used.
