Abstract

Rubber articles are ornamented with intaglio patterns &c., by a process characterized in that a paper stencil corresponding to the desired pattern is applied by a suitably coloured cementing layer to a rubber backing, whereupon the article is vulcanized under pressure and the paper backing removed leaving the coloured cement impressed in the rubber. The cementing layer may comprise gum Arabic, glue, or the like, but the preferred cements are those having a rubber content such as the known natural dispersions or solutions. Thin rubber sheets united with the paper stencil by rolling may also be used. The cement layer may be the same or a different colour to the base or it may be colourless, and may be applied to the stencil alone, the base alone, or to both stencil and base when a thicker layer is desired.
