Abstract
388,918. Dental handpieces. ANGELL, R. C., Prince Bay, Staten Island, New York, U.S.A. Jan. 29, 1932, No. 2705. [Class 81 (it).] A dental contra-angle handpiece comprises a split tool-holding head, a split elbow separate therefrom, and a sleeve arranged to hold all the parts together to form a rigid structure. The head 1 is split longitudinally in a plane transverse to the axis of the bur and is formed at the end of its neck with a bevelled groove, the base of which comprises four or more plane surfaces 52 .. 55. The elbow 2 is split in a plane at right-angles to the plane of division of the head and is formed with an internal collar having surfaces such as 60, 61 complementary to those on the head. A sleeve 3, in threaded engagement with the elbow, is formed with a bevelled end 65 to engage the conical surface 66 of the elbow and holds the parts thereof together and causes it to grip tightly the parts of the head. The lower section of the head is formed with a shoulder 9, Fig. 9, to receive a bushing 10. The upper section receives a bushing 15 formed with a bearing shoulder 20 for the chuck 21, to which is rigidly secured a bevel gear 25 driven by a bevel gear 42 on a shaft 41 fitted at its other end with a bevel gear 43 driven from the main shaft 46. The chuck 21 is formed with a projection 29 extending into its tool-receiving bore to engage a flattened portion of the tool shank. The tool is locked in place by a pivoted latch 32 mounted in a slot 31 in the head 1 and formed with a recess 35 to engage a groove in the tool shank. The latch is formed with a tail 37 engaging a recess 39 in the elbow 2 when in normal position.
