G., 17, Alexandra Road, and' MATHEWS,. P., 7, Bilton Rise, all in Rugby. Sept. 2, 1931, No. 24688. [Class 38 (v).] In the protection of a power transformer 5 by means of a relay 1 connected across a circulating-current circuit- 2 .. 4, undesired operation of the relay 1 by the asymmetrical component of the magnetizing current when switching in the transformer 5, is prevented by shunting the relay 1 by a relay 6 which closes its contacts only in response to the asymmetric component. A condenser 9 prevents operation of the relay 1 by that component, and a choke 8 prevents operation of relay 6 by anything but that component. Modifications are described and illustrated employing (1) a wattmeter-type relay having its windings'connected across the circuit 2 through rectifiers, (2) a balanced-beam. relay, the restraining and operating windings of which are respectively energized by the asymmetric component and the normal out-ofbalance current and (3) a vibrating-reed relay connected across the circuit 2 and operating contacts on either side of its mean position only with a normal out-of-balance current.
