Abstract
258,961. Reyrolle & Co., Ltd., A., and Biles, R. W. July 4, 1925. Cut-out arrangements; induction relays.-The tripping-coil C<2>, Fig. 1, of an overload circuit-breaker is energized from the secondary B' of a current transformer in the circuit to be protected through a relay A so that, normally, the relay alone is in circuit with the secondary winding but, when an overload or other disturbance occurs, the tripping coil is connected with the secondary winding and the relay is cut out of circuit. As shown in Fig. 1, on overload &c. the relay contact-member A<1> is carried over from contact A<3> to A<2> to effect the desired connections. In order to ensure that the current in the relay coil is not broken until it has effected the necessary switching action, the contact-member A may be provided with two springy contacts one of which does not leave the contact A<3> until the other has reached the contact A<2>. Alternatively the fixed contacts may be close together and a broad movable contact-member used to ensure the same result. The contact-member may be automatically retained in its displaced position by a hand-released detent F<4>, Fig. 2. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, an induction relay is employed and operates the contact-member by winding up a cord E<3> so that a time-lag is introduced into the action. The contact-member switches the supply from the transformer secondary H<1> over from the relay coil D to the tripping coil H. The relay may normally short-circuit the tripping coil and, on overload, remove the short-circuit and then short-circuit the relay. As applied to a balanced protective system of the Merz-Price type the relays T, Fig. 7, are in the pilot wire circuit and serve to connect the tripping coils S across the reverse-delta-connected transformers R, R<1>, R<2>.
