Abstract

388,649. Exhaust-silencers. ALEXANDER, W., 167, St. Vincent Street, Glasgow. July 7, 1932, No. 19202. [Class 7 (ii).] A casing 1 is divided into a number of unobstructed vortex chambers 4, 6, 8, &o. by apertured plain smooth diaphragms 5, 7, &c. Gases entering at 2 are whirled by guide vanes 3 between the casing and a conoidal baffle 12, the whirling passages being convergent in order to produce eddyless vortices, which persist through the whole of the chambers. A circular discharge opening 11 is provided or, alternatively, a tail portion 13 with slots 14. In a modification the casing, instead of being of aerofoil shape, is cylindrical.
