Abstract

Synthetic tanning agents are made by causing water-soluble condensation products of urea or thiourea and formaldehyde produced in alkaline solution to act on sulphonated hydrocarbons or their hydroxy derivatives, e.g. phenols, cresols or naphthols. The ureaaldehyde product is produced by condensing more than one mol. of the aldehyde (up to two mols.) with one mol. of the urea. Formaldehyde may be partly replaced by acetaldehyde. The products may be partially neutralized with oxides, hydroxides or salts of heavy metals. In examples, (1) urea is condensed with formaldehyde in alkaline medium and the resin is treated with sulphonated phenol; the product is then partly neutralized with ammonia or soda or by chromium or aluminium hydroxides (2) sulphonated b -naphthol is condensed as in (1), (3) naphthalene is sulphonated and condensed with the urea resin of (1), (4) sulphonated naphthalene is condensed with dimethylolurea, (5) commercial cresol is sulphonated and condensed with dimethylolurea. Specification 305,013, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the condensation of sulphonated phenols, naphthols or hydrocarbons with the products obtained from ureas (1 mol.) and aldehydes (1-2 mols.) in acid medium and the following examples are given: (1) Sulphonated naphthalene is added to a solution of urea and formaldehyde and the mixture heated, (2) a solution of thiourea and formaldehyde is added to sulphonated phenol and heated, (3) cresol is sulphonated, a solution of urea and paraldehyde added and the mixture heated after further addition of formaldehyde, (4) sulphonated naphthalene is condensed with thiourea and formaldehyde. Acetaldehyde can be used instead of formaldehyde. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
