[Class 28 (ii).] In a machine for opening eggs, a high-speed rotary cutting tool travels in an orbit around the egg, or the egg may rotate in contact with the rotary cutter. In Fig. 1, the egg is positioned in an aperture in the casing 1 by a spring- pressed holder 2. The knife 8 is carried on a beam pivoted on a frame 4 connected to the hand-crank 3. The knife is driven by step-up gearing deriving motion from a spur wheel 7 secured to the casing. The cutter is pressed against the egg shell by the pressure between the teeth of the knife-driving gears, or the beam may be loaded by a weight acted upon centrifugally during the rotation of the frame. In Fig. 4, the egg is carried in a rotating holder and the cutting tool comprises a striker 23 mounted on a pivoted arm 34 and rotated by a gear train connected with the rotating holder. The depth of the incision in the egg shell is determined by an adjustable screw 38 against which the arm 34 is normally pulled by a spring 37. A cam 29 is arranged to coact with a projection 34a on the arm 34, to withdraw the striker 23 intermittently from the egg. The spring 37 may be replaced by an oppositelyacting spring tending to withdraw the striker from the egg, in which case, the arm is pressed in by a hand-actuated rod, to engage the striker with the egg.
