In a continuous-rod cigarette-making machine with a revolving knife head 1, Fig. 1, having means for an automatic feed of the knife 28, Fig. 2, the' means including a hollow spindle 2, Fig. 1, rotatably supported and carrying at one the spindle 2 and extending into the head 1 and. of its ends the head 1, a shaft 8 passing through which shaft 8 is adapted to actuate the mechanism within the head 1 for feed movement of the knife, there is provided a train of gears 10-13 forming a driving connection between the spindle 2 and the shaft 8 such that the latter rotates at a different speed from that of the spindle. One end of the shaft 8 is connected to a crank-pin 17 in the head 1, the other end being driven from the spindle 2 through the gearing 10-13 thereby causing a slow rotation of the crank-pin 17 and hence feed movement of the knife through rod 18, pawl 19, ratchet wheel 21, shaft 22, Fig. 2, worm 23, worm wheel 24, shaft 25, pinion 26 and rack 27. The feed movement of the knife may also be effected manually using part of the above automatic mechanism, the movement being initiated by a lever that carries a pawl. engaging the ratchet wheel 21. After the knife has worn out and consequently reached the outer limit of its feed movement and a new blade has been installed the knife is retracted, to its innermost position by operation of a further knob which disengages the pinion 26 from the rack 27 so that the latter may be moved inwardly by hand, its own weight or a spring.
