Abstract
387,481. Converting rotary into oscillating motion. BECKETT & ANDERSON, Ltd. and BECKETT, F., 59, Greendyke Street, Glasgow. Dec. 28, 1931, No. 35762. [Class 80 (i).] The shaft 10 of a rope-winding drum or drums 12, 13 is oscillated from a continuouslyrotating motor 1 through reduction gearing 3, crank and connecting-rod mechanism 6, 7, and a toothed segment 8 meshing with a pinion 9 on the shaft 10. Each drum is secured to the shaft 10 by a split ring 16 fixed to the shaft and expanded within the drum, and is provided with external ratchet teeth 22. To tension the ropes, pivoted detents 23 are put into engagement with the teeth 22 and each drum is released from the shaft in turn while the other drum is rotated by operation of the gearing, either by power or by a spanner adapted to be engaged with the polygonal end 21 of one of the gear shafts, when both ropes have been correctly tensioned, both drums are released from the shaft and the gearing is operated until the crank 6 is in correct operative position. The rings 16 are then expanded and the detents 23 disengaged. The apparatus may be used for driving the reciprocating conveyer described in Specification 382,363, [Group XXX]. According to the Provisional Specification, the point of connection of the connecting-rod 7 to the segment 8 may be adjustable.
