Abstract

Salts of dialkylaminoarylphosphinous acids are rendered stable by heating them for some time, preferably in vacuo and at a temperature of 70-120 DEG C. The starting materials are obtainable by the process of Specification 214,836, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], and the following are specified: the sodium salts of 4 - dimethyl - and diethylamino - 2 -methyl - benzene-1-phosphinous acids, the sodium salts of 4-dimethylamino-2-methoxy- and ethoxy-benzene-1-phosphinous acids, the potassium salt of 4 - dimethylamino - 2 - methylbenzene -1-phosphinous acid, the sodium salt of 4-dimethylaminobenzene-1-phosphinous acid, the sodium salts of 4-dimethylamino-2-dimethyland diethylaminobenzene-1-phosphinous acid and the sodium salt of 4-dimethylamino-2-ethylbenzene-1-phosphinous acid. Examples are given of the treatment of the crystallized sodium salts of (1) 4-dimethylamino-2-methylbenzene-1-phosphinous acid by heating on the water bath for 3 days or at 100 DEG C. under 20 mm. pressure for 4 hours, and (2) 4-dimethylaminobenzene-1-phosphinous acid and 4-diethylamino-2-methylbenzene-1-phosphinous acid by heating for 24 hours under 20 mm. pressure at 100 DEG C. and 80 DEG C. respectively.
