Abstract
Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is prepared from 2-keto-laevo-gulonic acid or from its derivatives which yield a 2-keto-laevo-gulonic acid on treatment with acids, by heating in the presence of an acid and preferably between a pH of 3,4 and 0,3. Suitable derivatives which may be used instead of the free acid are salts, esters, and methylene-ether-compounds. The convertion takes place from 60 DEG upwards. It is preferred to interrupt the treatment to remove the ascorbic acid soon after it is formed, since it is not stable to prolonged heating. The heating may be carried out without any additions or after dilution with solid or liquid diluents such as sand, salt, water, alcohols, dioxan, glycol ether or glycerine ester. In examples: (1) 2-keto-laevo-gulonic acid is heated in water in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide for two hours, allowed to crystallize and filtered. (2) Diacetone-2-keto-laevo-gulonic acid is heated at 100 DEG C. for 3 hours with 0,2 normal hydrochloric acid. All the acetone is removed in the first half hour. The solution is allowed to cool and seeded. Specification 427,286 is referred to.
