Abstract

386,332. Fluid-pressure brakes. STERN, N., 23, Gustavsburgstrasse, Frankfort-on-Main, Germany. April 15, 1931, No. 11178. [Class 103 (i).] Brakes, particularly for tram cars and rail vehicles, are operated by hydraulic transmission comprising two or more independent hydraulic systems, each of which is actuated from a different point. In one arrangement each system 9, 10 is connected to a separate brake cylinder 11, 13 in each brake. The pressure-creating pistons 7, 8 of the two systems are operated by the crank handles 1, 2 on the driver's stands. In a modification, each brake is provided with one cylinder connected to an automatic change-over valve which connects it to the system which is being operated. This valve comprises a casing 23 connected at either end to the two hydraulic systems 20, 21 and containing a piston 25 or a ball. In a further modification only one change-over valve is provided and is adapted to connect both brake cylinders either with one system or the other. In a modification of the form described in Fig. 1, each system has a branch pipe to the other system and a hand-operated change-over valve adapted to connect the pressure-creating piston of each system to either the one system or the other. In a further modification comprising two brake cylinders in each brake, each brake cylinder is connected to an automatic change-over valve adapted to connect it to either of two pipes, either of which can be connected to a pressure-creating piston by a hand-operated change-over valve. The valve comprises a double cone valve operated by a screw thread and a square at the top which is normally covered by a screw cap and packing gland.
