386,252. Cable joints. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Eby, E. D. ; 100, Holmes Road, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) July 20, 1932, No, 20527. Convention date, July 20, 1931. [Classes 36 and 38 (i),] An insulating joint for connecting together the lead sheaths of two cable ends or for connecting the adjacent ends of an interrupted sheathing on a single cable length comprises spaced and aligned metal tubes 3, 4, the outer ends of which are adapted to be secured respectively, by wiping, to the ends of the sheaths to be jointed. The inner ends of the tubes 3, 4 are connected by a sleeve 11 of insulating material which is moulded over the tubes under, pressure and preferably consists of a compound of cotton fibres and phenolic resin. To render oil-tight the joint between the tubes 3, 4 and the sleeve 11, oil-resisting gaskets 10 are disposed in circumferential grooves 5 in the tube ends and are maintained under compression by the moulded insulating sleeve 11. Grooves 7, also fitted with gaskets, may be formed in the end faces 8 of the tubes. The gaskets 10 are preferably formed from a mixture of 25 per cent asbestos fibre and 75 per cent of the alkyd resin known under the registered Trade Mark " Glyptal."
