Abstract

386,093. Cable joints. SUDDEUTSCHE KABELWERKE ZWEIGNIEDERLASSUNG DER VEREINIGTE DEUTSCHE METALLWERKE AKT.-GES., 244, Waldhofstrasse, Mannheim, Germany. Dec. 1, 1931, No. 33261. Convention date, Dec. 4, 1930. [Class 38 (i).] In jointing oil-filled cables the end of the hollow conductor a forming the oil channel is closed by a hollow plug b having one or both ends closed by discs c of a fusible metal. After making and insulating the joint in the ordinary way the oil passage through the joint is opened by melting the end c of the plug by warming the joint. The fusible metal is chosen to melt at about 100‹ C. When the cable is opened and plugged, the plug is inserted far enough to prevent leakage of oil through the bare cable end, and the end is chilled to prevent percolation of the oil through the cut insulation. Air may be exhausted from the joint after completion. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of a filling for the hollow plug, consisting of a fusible material soluble in the oil, e.g. a mixture of oil and resin. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
