385,913. Buttonhole-sewing machines. HUGHES, R. M., 72, Cannon Street, London. -(International Button Hole Sewing Machine Co. ; 502, Harrison Avenue, Boston, U.S.A.) Sept. 6, 1932, No. 24870. [Class 112.] The work support and work clamps are so arranged that the needle enters the work at an oblique angle to the plane thereof, causing the stitch bights 29 on one side of the buttonhole to be spaced further from the slit than the bight 26 on the reverse side. Figs. 5 and 6 show the stitches at the buttonhole slit on the upper and lower sides of the fabric 1 respectively. In the form illustrated, the work support 11 has a projection 17 with an inclined face 18 co-operating with undercut faces 20, 22 of the mat 5 and work clamps 2 respectively, to cause the fabric 1 adjacent the buttonhole slit to be bent upwardly, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the needle 7 enters one face of the fabric at a considerable distance from the slit, and emerges close to the slit on the other side. The rest of the machine is of usual construction. This arrangement obviates any necessity to open the cut slit to ensure the passage of the needle therethrough when sewing the buttonhole.
