Abstract
385,699. Guards for insulators and bus-bar joints. ALLEN, H. R. and CROYDON CABLE WORKS, Ltd., Mitcham Road, Croydon. Nov. 3, 1931, No. 30454. [Classes 36 and 38 (i).] An insulating guard more particularly for preventing the accumulation of moisture and dirt on the surface of exposed insulators or bus-bar joints is moulded from one or more sheets of insulating material and comprises a plurality of intersecting tubular limbs having a continuous split extending from the free end of one limb to the free end of another, the split passing through the junction of the limbs and being adapted to be closed by lacing, rivets or stitching after the application of the guard to the insulator or joint. Figs. 1 and 2 show a guard for a right-angle joint in a bus-bar and formed from a material known under the registered Trade Mark "Pernax." Two sheets 1, 2 of this material are moulded under heat over an elbow-shaped former.and formed along the cranked edges with flanges 3 perforated to receive lacing 4 which is preferably a thin cord coated with " Pernax." Fig. 3 shows a guard for aT-joint formed by moulding a cruciform blank over a T-shaped former having limbs of circular section. The guard is formed with perforated flanges 3 adapted to receive lacing 4. The ends of the limbs in both constructions are tapered to grip the bus-bars. Fig. 5 shows a T-shaped guard for protecting a string of suspension insulators 8 in which only the lower edge of the guard is split and provided with perforated flanges 3. The horizontal limb of the guard tapers towards its ends which may be flared outwardly. The vertical limb may be adapted to cover the whole string of insulators or may be formed with a tapered end 7 for engagement with the uppermost of the insulators 8.
