Abstract
385,553. Securing railway &c. rails. GRIFFITHS, J. P., 44, North Street, Durban, South Africa. July 18, 1932, No. 20306. Addition to 358,001. [Class 104 (ii).] The rail 1 is secured to a chair, chair-plate, or sleeper by clips 4 which engage the rail flange and are fixed by T-headed bolts 5 which pass through the clips and slots 12 in the plate 2. The clips have depending lugs 9 which engage the slots 6 and are tapered on their outer edge to fit the tapered outer edges 12 of the slots, so that movement of the clips towards the narrow end of the slot, due to rail creep, binds them more tightly on the rail flange. In another form, only one clip is used, the opposite edge of the rail flange being held by a lug integral with the plate 2. In the form shown in Fig. 12, a buttress clip 21 is combined with one of the clips 20. In the form shown in Fig. 14 for a double or check rail chair, one of the clips 30 is of buttress form, and has a lip 35 supporting a key 31 provided with enlarged ends. The slot in the chair 34 for the middle clip 32 has both edges parallel, and the rail flange enters a recess 37 in the bolt 33. In another form, the two lugs 9 are tapered in opposite directions and the two ends of the slots 6 are correspondingly tapered so that movement of the clips in either direction presses the clips more tightly on the rail.
