[Class 131.] Electric curling-tongs comprise a pair of hollow handles 11 of square or rectangular cross section connected together by an external hinge 2 and through which pass electric conductors 9 connected to resistances 6 housed in shell cups 1 mounted on the ends of the handles, the cups being adapted, when brought together, to form a heating-chamber accommodating the tress of hair to be curled. The handles 11 are curved in the region of the hinge 2 so as to be co-planar on either side thereof. The cups 1 are provided with registering semicircular openings 14 through which the tress of hair is introduced into the heating-chamber, and one of the cups is provided with a lip or flange 3 adapted to receive the rim of the other cup. The resistances 6 are contained in metal flanged cups 4 which are forced into the cups 1, and are each wound on a sheet of mica 5, a second sheet of mica being inserted between the resistance and the cup 4, and two sheets of mica and a sheet of asbestos being inserted between the resistance and the base of the cup 1. The moistened tress of hair is wound on a flexible curler, covered with gauze, and the curler then bent round and its ends twisted together. The curler is then inserted in a flannel bag, which may be lined with aluminium or tin foil, and inserted in the heating-chamber with the end of the bag protruding through the opening 14, which may be provided with a fibre ring or washer. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the electrical resistances may be dispensed with, the cups being heated by a gas ring or spirit lamp, a metal heat-retaining disc being provided between each of the cups 1 and the handle. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
